Tracking and trailing are two different methods of scent detection used by dogs. In tracking, the dog follows a specific set of footprints by detecting the scent of broken vegetation. Tracking tests the precision of the working dog.
In trailing, the dog focuses on detecting flakes fallen off the surface of the skin. Trailing is a test of a dog’s ability to distinguish and follow one person’s scent and identify that person. A trailing dog is typically worked on a harness and long line, while a tracking dog is worked on a leash attached to their collar.
• Definition: Mantrailing is when a trained dog follows the scent trail of a specific individual or animal. Unlike “tracking,” which sticks to footprints or ground disturbance, mantrailing allows the dog to follow airborne scent particles and skin rafts that drift and settle in the environment.
• How it works: Every living creature constantly sheds microscopic scent particles (skin cells, pheromones, bacteria). Dogs’ noses are up to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours, so they can detect and follow these invisible trails.
🔍 The Process in Pet Detection
1. Scent Collection: We start with a scent article from the missing pet (like bedding, a toy, or fur).
2. Dog’s Work: The dog smells this item and begins trailing the scent in the environment.
3. Handler’s Role: The handler reads the dog’s body language and behavior, interpreting when the dog is “in scent,” when it loses the trail, and when it indicates a strong location.
4. Outcome: Instead of finding the pet directly, the dog often leads us to a place where the pet was recently. This is crucial because it tells the owner where to focus their search, set up feeding stations, or place cameras.
📍 Why We Rarely Walk Up to the Pet
• Pets Move Constantly: By the time the dog follows the trail, the pet may have left the area.
• Safety & Stress: Walking directly up to a lost pet can scare it away. Our method avoids chasing and instead empowers the owner to re-establish contact.
• Objective: The true goal is location intelligence—pinpointing where the pet was last, not necessarily capturing it immediately.
🧭 How Owners Benefit
• Direction & Focus: Instead of searching blindly, owners know where to concentrate efforts.
• Evidence-Based: The dog’s trail provides confirmation of sightings or helps rule out areas.
• Next Steps: Once a location is identified, owners can use humane traps, food stations, or community alerts to bring their pet home.
